Spam

Unwanted or unsolicited email is often referred to as Spam mail. Spam is a common and annoying problem affecting all email users. This link contains some useful information about Spam, how you get it and how to deal with it. http://www.studentit.unimelb.edu.au/itguide/security/dealing.html

The University of Melbourne has developed a centralised Anti-Spam solution for staff and students. Every message that is centrally scanned is assessed and given a score based on the likelihood of it being Spam. To allow Webmail (and other e-mail software) to filter automatically, a mail header is added to each e-mail containing the Spam score. For more information on how to set up a spam filter, go to the following link. http://www.infodiv.unimelb.edu.au/systems/spam/

How To

  • Add a printer [.pdf 48KB].
  • Get rid of Eudora's 'Remote Instance' error message. When Eudora is launched, it creates an owner.lok file in your mymail folder. If you get a warning about a remote instance, that file has not been deleted (crashing out of Eudora doesn't give it the opportunity to clean up after itself and sometimes leaves a corrupted owner.lok file). Delete this file (usually in H:\mymail) and you should be able to open Eudora again without the remote instance dialog box.
  • 'Unblock' your e-mail download to Eudora. Occasionally Eudora will stall during the process of downloading your e-mail form the University mail server. This is because a temporary file created during the download of a virus-laden message has been deleted by the departmental file server. However, the message is still sitting on the University mail server. The solution is to login to the webmail interface and delete the offending message, most likely to be the oldest message
