PhD Scholarships

Scholarship Announcement

Two new ‘top-up’ PhD scholarships valued at $18,000 each over three years will be available from December 2008 The Larkins prize winner will be offered the first scholarship to continue their studies with the Department and the second will be offered to the best PhD applicant.
If the Larkins prize winner chooses not to accept the scholarship, it will be made available to PhD applicants on a merit basis. Merit will be judged on academic performance, publication record, extra-curricular activities associated with medical research, recommendation/s from external referees, community leadership, and demonstrated commitment to a career in medical research. The value of the scholarships will be increased each year in line with the MRS.
Offers will be made in December of each year. Both scholarships will only be awarded to students who have already obtained another competitive scholarship.

Students wanting to enrol full-time for a PhD in the Department are encouraged to apply for scholarships, including the Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) and Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRS), through the University of Melbourne. The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences also offers a limited number of postgraduate scholarships.

Individual groups may provide additional top-up funding for PhD students who obtain externally funded PhD Scholarships.  Please contact the heads of groups for further information.

Student Travel Grants

$500 per year (cumulative, max. $1500) allocated by Department for each full-time PhD student to attend an approved national or international conference.

The Larkins Prize for the Best BSc(Hons) Student

The department established the prize to honour the contribution of Professor Richard Larkins, who held the position of James Stewart Professor of Medicine and Head of Department from 1984 to 1997. The Larkins Prize (of approximately $1000) is awarded to the student achieving the highest results for the fourth year Bachelor of Science Honours course in the Department of Medicine (RMH/WH); students are nominated by the Head of Department.
