About the Department of Medicine (RMH/WH)
The Royal Melbourne and Western Hospitals are home to leading University of Melbourne clinicians, scientists and students undertaking research across a wide range of illnesses and diseases. Our main focus is translational, or bench to bedside research.
The Department's mission statement is:
In conjunction with the other University Departments in the RMH/WH Cluster, to facilitate and promote, within the Royal Melbourne and Western Hospitals, academic medical practice, teaching and clinical relevant research of the highest international quality. To facilitate, promote and evaluate the effective knowledge transfer of the outcomes of these activities to enhance the quality of life and health of the community: locally, nationally and internationally.
At both hospitals, we strive to integrate teaching, research, and patient care to improve health outcomes locally and internationally.
Biomedical students from the University of Melbourne are trained in our laboratories by leading scientists, health practitioners and researchers. Many of these students will go on to become international leaders in their chosen field.
At the Royal Melbourne and Western Hospitals, we have teams of internationally renowned scientists, clinicians, researchers and students working together to find answers for key global health challenges including cancer, brain trauma, kidney disease, asthma, bone diseases, epilepsy, mental health, obesity, diabetes, stroke, advanced imaging and infectious diseases.
Above all, we are committed to ensuring our patients today and in the future receive the best care and health outcomes.
